SPECIAL PROJECTS
THE SIDEMEN: THE BACKBONE OF COUNTRY MUSIC
(Consulting Producer)
The Sidemen is a music-rich, emotionally resonant documentary tracing the 75-year history of Nashville’s studio players. Through intimate interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and a present-day session with Brittany Spencer, the film reveals the artistry, humanity, and cultural legacy of the men and women behind country music’s most iconic tracks.
The film travels from the legendary “A-Team” of the 1950s to today’s genre-crossing innovators. Along the way, it illuminates powerful intersections of gender, race, and disability—featuring stories of Velma Smith, DeFord Bailey, Gordon Mote, and Jenee Fleenor—while anchoring the viewer in the unshakable camaraderie of Nashville’s studio culture.
LINCOLN PORTRAT: REFOCUSED
(Executive Producer)
Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait does not merely describe democracy — it enacts it.
Created by Aaron Copland at a moment when the nation was searching for its moral center, the work gives musical voice to the enduring ideals of Abraham Lincoln.
In honor of America250 and Copland’s legacy as one of America’s defining composers, Lincoln Portrait: Refocused is a recording and film project by Nashville-based producer, writer, and arranger Peter Groenwald, that seeks to honor the spirit of this profound composition by drawing the listener closer to its humanity — deepening intimacy, amplifying diverse voices, and reminding us that democracy is not only something we inherit, but something we continually create together.
In partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we are inviting youth across Tennessee to lend their voices to a powerful re-recording of Lincoln Portrait by Aaron Copland. This project centers young people as the essential narrators of Lincoln’s words—honoring resilience, democracy, and the courage it takes to speak truth in their own time. Together, we believe Lincoln’s words resonate deeply with the principles of mental health advocacy and the work of building a more compassionate democracy
